Pi It Forward
This Thursday, March 14th (3.14) is Pi Day. The Hazleton Area Public Library will be selling individual serving pies, in cooperation with George Boyle, local Tastykake sales rep, to benefit the library’s overdue fund. There will be several flavors of pie available. Donations start at $1.00 per pie. Patrons with overdue fines can use one (1) of the donation slips to help pay for fines. Donation slips will be available until funds are depleted. Delicious pies will be available for one day only, Thursday March 14th at the main library.
Mixed Media Painting Adults & Teens 16+
Join us this Wednesday March 13th at 6:00 at the Hazleton Area Public Library for a mixed media painting class. Attendees will be exploring some basic techniques in watercolor and oil pastel. This is a great class for beginners. This program will take place in the community room. Use the Green Street entrance of the library. Registration is required. Caesar’s Warning: The Ides of March
The Hazleton Area Public Library will be hosting a film screening to celebrate the famous literary warning in William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. The library will be showing the 1953 film adaptation of the play on Friday, March 15th at 2:00. This adult program is free and open to the public. Healthcare in Retirement
This adult program, the third in our winter financial program series will take place on Tuesday, March 19th at 12:00 in the library's community room. Michael J. Oresick Jr. CFP, of Lagana Wealth Advisory Group at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC will be here to talk to those looking to learn more about what financial resources they have access to as the begin planning and saving for the expenses associated with Healthcare in retirement. Join us for this month's Throwback Thursday film program taking place on Thursday, March 21st at 6:00. This month’s film is the 1986 classic comedy about three friends who are convinced to skip school one last time before graduation. The main protagonist is a pro at skipping class, and is determined to have an epic adventure…despite the principal’s attempts to catch him in the act. Registration is not required and can be made by visiting or calling the reference department at 570-454-2961. The film will be shown in the Community Room (Green St entrance) of the library. Popcorn and refreshments will be provided.
Since March 2nd was Dr. Seuss’s birthday, this month HAPL's Hazy Painters will be redesigning any one of Dr.Seuss’s collective works. The program is scheduled for Saturday, March 23 from 1:30-2:30. The choice in book to be redesigned is up to the individual. Several different books will be available if attendees need inspiration. This program is free and open to the public; the library provides all necessary supplies. Registration for this program is required, and can be made by visiting or calling the reference department of the library at 570-454-2961. The last day to register is Thursday, March 21st. Space is limited. The program will be held in the library's Community room. Attendees should use the Green Street entrance of the library. All ages welcome. Small children should be accompanied by an adult. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Lap-sit Baby and Me
The next Lap-sit Program will take place on Thursday, March 14th at 10:30. The program is for children ages birth to 23 months. It involves stories, fingerplays, lap bounces, and songs. Registration is required, and can be made by contacting the library’s Children’s Department at 570-454-2961.
Toddler Storytime, for children currently ages 2 and 3, is offered Wednesdays at 10:00. Toddlers must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Preschool Storytime, for children ages 4-5, is offered Wednesdays at 6:00. Preschool Storytime incorporates many facets of early learning and school readiness.The first program takes place on Wednesday, March 20th, and will continue for six weeks. On Monday, March 18th, the library will be offering a program for children in Kindergarten- 3rd grade from 6:00-7:00. Children will learn about different topics and concepts through stories, activities, playtime, and crafts. Animal Shelter Materials Drive
Throughout the month of March, the library’s Teen Advisory Board will be collecting materials to donate to the Hazleton Animal Shelter. All donations can be dropped off at the main library’s Children’s Department. The animal shelter has these items on their wish list: Clay cat litter, dry Purina kitten chow, dry Purina cat food, dry dog food, dry puppy food, canned kitten food, canned cat food, canned dog food, canned puppy food, dog and cat treats, dog and cat beds, dog and cat toys, collars, harnesses, leashes, hand sanitizer, towels, blankets, sheets, comforters, quilts, stainless steel bowls, plastic litter pans, floor cleaners, mops, brooms, toilet paper, paper towels, computer paper, pens, pencils, paper clips, and computer ink cartridges(Epson XL127).
Pet Toys Program
On Tuesday, March 26th, children ages 5 and up are invited to help the library’s Teen Advisory Board make toys that will be donated to the Hazleton Animal Shelter. The program goes from 6:00-7:00. Registration is required, and can be made by contacting the library’s Children’s Department at 570-454-2961. Registration begins Monday, March 11th.
In our STEAM program, children in grades 4-8 will experiment with different forms of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math with fun activities. Join us tonight, from 6:00-7:00. This month we will use squishy circuits to learn about electrical circuits and conductivity. These concepts will be explored through homemade play dough. Come and try out this electrifying program. Teen Time: Exploring Light
At 6:00 on Tuesday, March 19th , students in grades 7-12 will learn about the science of light with hands-on activities and experiments. We’ll also make a craft that glows in the dark. Registration is required, and can be made by contacting the library’s Children’s Department at 570-454-2961.
Teen Advisory Board
The Hazleton Area Public Library has some open spaces on our Teen Advisory Board. The board meets one Tuesday evening a month from 6:00-7:00. The board helps to plan future programs, brainstorm on how to reach out to the community, and give input on materials in the library’s Young Adult collection. Members will also have the opportunities to get volunteer hours. Board members must be high school students aged 14-18. Teens must complete an application in order to be considered for the board.
