Pennsylvania One Book, Every Young Child

One Book, Every Young Child is Pennsylvania’s first ever collaborative project using the vehicle of the One Book, One State program to highlight the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers, ages 3 –6 years. Studies show that activities like reading aloud and sharing books and stories are critical to early learning.

An element of this statewide reading initiative is the traveling trunk, which was developed by museum educators. The trunk is filled with puzzles, activities, puppets, games and manipulatives for young children. The trunk is available for loan to preschools and daycares. HAPL will host the traveling trunk several times throughout the year. Check our Calendar of Events for dates and times. For more information, contact the Children’s Department of the Library at 454-2961.

For more information about this initiative or to find other great activities that parents can do with young children visit www.paonebook.org.

One Book, Every Young Child is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Please Touch Museum, State Museum of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Library Association, Pennsylvania Public Television Network, Pennsylvania Center for the Book, Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children, The Pennsylvania Child Care Association, and Verizon. This program also is supported in part by the Institute of the Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the state of Pennsylvania.

Materials for Children

Our collection offers board books, picture books, easy readers, novels, a wide array of non-fiction, paperbacks, magazines, award books, reference materials, and a special section of books for parents and teachers. We also have a growing number of bilingual books written in English and Spanish. Print materials are located in the Children's Department. Audio and video materials for children can be found on the lower level.

Programs for Children

The Children's Department of the Hazleton Area Public Library offers Toddler and Preschool storytime sessions several times throughout the year. Toddler Storytime is for children aged 2 and 3, accompanied by an adult. Preschool Storytime is for children aged 4, 5, and 6. Storytimes are thematic programs filled with stories, songs, activities and crafts designed to foster a love of books and reading.

School aged children can join us for special evening or Saturday programs throughout the year. Check our calendar of events for the next great program!

Teacher Services

The Library offers several services for area educators. Browse our Parent-Teacher Collection shelves for great new ideas to use in your home or classroom. Try a Teacher Collection and have a thematic box of books prepared to use in your classroom. Assignment Alert will allow the Library to prepare materials for use in the library by your students. Teachers, scout leaders and home-school teachers can have a field trip to the library. We can accommodate your class (up to 35 students) and provide thematic storytimes or library instruction. Please give at least two weeks notice for field trips, teacher collections, and assignment alerts.

POWER Library

The POWER Library is offered as a service of Pennsylvania's public libraries, school libraries, and the State Library. The POWER library allows you to access thousands of full text periodical articles, newspapers, plus photographs, pictures, charts, maps, and reference materials for young people and more. You will find materials of interest in most subject areas for all age groups from young children to adults.
